This simple pine table, handmade around 1820–40, belonged to a child in early America. Scaled to fit small hands and bodies, it gave children their first experience of having furniture designed just for them—a space to draw, build, eat, and imagine.
A child pulls up a stool and spreads colored paper across the smooth pine surface. Fingers move across wood still warm from morning sun through the window. Here, at this table sized for her alone, the world shrinks to what she can hold and make.
